Notable features
Loma Linda University is a Christian, health-sciences institution with a world-renowned Medical Center and Schools of Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, Religion, and Science and Technology with student enrollment around 4,000. Notable firsts at the Loma Linda University Medical Center include baboon-to-human heart transplant and the first split-brain surgery.
Loma Linda is a center of activity for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and is home to the largest Adventist congregation at the Loma Linda University Church of Seventh-day Adventists with weekly attendance around 3,000. Many residents of Loma Linda are adherents to this Christian denomination. Since a popular practice of Seventh-day Adventists is vegetarianism, most restaurants in Loma Linda feature a vegetarian menu in addition to regular menu items. Baker's Drive-Thru at Anderson Street and Redlands Boulevard was the first store in that fast-food chain to feature the now-famous "Loma Linda" menu, chock full of vegetarian items such as the Gardenburger. The chain has since dropped the Loma Linda name and expanded its vegetarian choices.
Due to the large number of Loma Linda residents who are Seventh-day Adventists, the city is one of the few which has weekend mail delivery service on Sunday instead of Saturday.
Schools
The city of Loma Linda is part of the Redlands Unified School District with the Bryn Mawr Elementary school being situated within Loma Linda City limits. Also, situated within the city of Loma Linda is Loma Linda Academy, a K-12 institution in addition to the Loma Linda University. Both the Academy and the University are run by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Water contamination and air pollution
Ground water near Loma Linda is contaminated by a plume of the chemical perchlorate which was used in the manufacture of rocket fuel. The chemical was formerly (decades ago) prescribed by physicians to control overactive thyroid glands. Attempts to quantitate the effects of low-level exposure to perchlorate have met with resistance from environmental (and other) activists. A nearby plant operated by Lockheed has been accused of improperly disposing of the rocket fuel, which leached into the ground water northeast of Loma Linda. Loma Linda's municipal water supply is nevertheless unaffected by the plume, the extent of which is monitored regularly. The San Bernardino valley has some of the worst air quality in the United States, owing to prevailing westerly winds that blow Los Angeles' pollution into the area.
Crime rate
In north Loma Linda, which is the border of Loma Linda and the city of San Bernardino, gangs are one of the biggest crime issues.
The city is an oasis of sorts, with low crime rates compared with neighboring Colton, Fontana, and San Bernardino, according to local law enforcement data compiled by the FBI: In 2004, Loma Linda logged 18 violent crimes per 10,000 residents, while neighboring Fontana saw 51 and San Bernardino 133. |
