Camp Pendleton is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 8,854 at the 2000 census.
Geography
Camp Pendleton is located at 33°13′0″N 117°23′28″W? / ?33.21667°N 117.39111°W? / 33.21667; -117.39111 (33.216620, -117.390989).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 10.1 km² (3.9 mi²), of which 9.9 km² (3.8 mi²) is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) (2.05%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,854 people, 2,004 households, and 1,947 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 890.2/km² (2,308.3/mi²). There were 2,207 housing units at an average density of 221.9/km² (575.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 62.37% White, 14.30% African American, 1.60% Native American, 3.81% Asian, 0.70% Pacific Islander, 10.76% from other races, and 6.46% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 19.10% of the population.
There were 2,004 households out of which 80.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 90.1% were married couples living together, 4.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 2.8% were non-families. 2.4% of all households were made up of individuals and none had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.53 and the average family size was 3.56.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 34.8% under the age of 18, 30.0% from 18 to 24, 34.0% from 25 to 44, 1.2% from 45 to 64, and 0.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 22 years. For every 100 females there were 150.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 180.8 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $32,829, and the median income for a family was $31,998. Males had a median income of $21,311 versus $24,010 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $11,114. About 7.9% of families and 8.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.3% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
Politics
In the state legislature Camp Pendleton South is located in the 38th Senate District, represented by Republican Mark Wyland, and in the 73rd Assembly District, represented by Republican Mimi Walters. Federally, Camp Pendleton South is located in California's 49th congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of R +10 and is represented by Republican Darrell Issa. |
